Application of Active Learning Methods to Civil Engineering Education

Due to rapid developments in various areas in the world, the field of civil engneering is also going through a change. Today`s civil engineers are expected to adapt to changing conditions, to be aware of the necessity for life-long learning, to design and conduct experiments, to collect and analyze data, to be able to cooperate in disciplined teams and to have other highly sophisticated skills. Furthermore, the students of the 21st century are completely different from the students of the 20th century. Educational methods that worked for the earlier generation no longer lead to the desired result in today`s students. When current students are compared to former student generations, basic differences are observed. In order to effectively educate these students, new methods have to be employed. In this presentation methods and tools that are used at the Civil Engineering Department of Atılım University to enhance the learning experience of current students will be summarized. The observations and data from these classes will be presented and future enhancements and applications will be proposed.
