Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Doğdu

The Web has grown in the last 25 years to billions of pages and it still basically caters to the human eye. We read and navigate the web easily, yet it is difficult for the computers (search engines) to find the right information in this haystack, since most of the data on the web is unstructured. Semantic web is the next generation of the web where data is more formally described along with its readable form and this allows computers and software to utilize the web of data semantically. In the first part of my talk I will talk about the semantic web and its related technologies and how the technology transforms the current Web of Documents into what is called the Web of Data. A strong manifestation of the semantic Web vision right now is Linked Data. It refers to a large corpus of structured data constructed, mostly automatically, using the semantic web, containing billions of information pieces. Linked data is being used in many applications and research projects, such as question answering, open information extraction, and so on. In the second part of my talk I will talk about our research on linked data and how we are using linked data for different learning tasks. The future web will consist of all kinds of devices and machines connected via internet, and it is called the Internet of Things (IoT). In the last part of my talk I will talk about our industry collaboration in developing a framework for IoT that is based on semantic web, big data, and machine learning principles.
